Is it Safe to Buy Gemstones Online?
Posted on May 22 2019
Gemstones can be a very tricky thing to buy online
Before we address the safety of buying gemstones online, we want to address a few reasons why you may want to:
Retail jewelry stores often only have a small supply of stones that are usually at a lower quality with a high price mark-up. This, unfortunately, tends to be especially true when gemstones are purchased in a finished jewelry piece. As a consumer, you may not even get to pick the stone that will be in the finished piece. From variation in color to not quite having the luster and flash that you imagined, buying a piece of jewelry with a shelf-stock gem can be a bit like playing the lottery.
Buying a loose gemstone allows you to evaluate the stone itself prior to having it set in a piece of jewelry and is the only way to see the true color of the stone as well as the best way to identify any inclusions.
How do you go about buying a loose gemstone?
There are many places to buy loose gemstones, but finding a reputable gem dealer with a wide variety of stones in some areas can be difficult. Buying online simplifies this process and makes buying gemstones easily accessible, no matter your location, but it’s important to do so safely. There are three important factors to consider when you are shopping for gemstones online.
1. Be sure that stone pictured is the real stone.
This may be surprising, but many websites use stock photos to show the type of stone, rather than showing a picture of the actual stone. A reputable buyer will photograph each stone individually in a way that is the best portrayal of the stone that you will receive.
That being said, gemstones are incredibly difficult to photograph accurately. Few companies can do this well. We pride ourselves in constantly continuing to grow in our skill in this department.
Should you ever want to see a few more pictures of a stone prior to purchase, just let us know. We strive to accurately portray each one of our gemstones and will happily accommodate a request to provide you with more information.
2. Verify Authenticity
For those who may be new to the gemstone world, it can be a bit overwhelming to jump into. Be wary of sellers who are not willing/able to provide you with a signed document stating exactly what you are buying. It is also unethical for a seller to give the appraisal on the gemstone that they are selling.
Each one of our gemstones comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by a GIA Graduate Gemologist.3. Look for an Unchallenged Money-Back Guarantee
This final qualification is key to ensuring your safety when purchasing gemstones online. The only way to truly see if a stone is what you want is to see it with your own eyes. The best way to do this is knowing that you can send it back if it’s not quite what you were expecting and with the ability to get it appraised by another gemologist.
We want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase, which is why we offer a 21-Day Inspection period on all of our stones. You can return any of our gemstones within this period, for any reason.
We recognize that it can be difficult to find a reputable retailer for loose gemstones and we also understand the disappointment that can exist when an investment isn’t all that you thought it would be. This is why we exist.
We believe that the better educated our customers are on their purchases, the happier they will be with them and we are dedicated to creating a place for educated consumers. We understand that some people prefer internet purchasing for the convenience, but often miss the personal touch -- we’re here to offer both! If you want to talk through your purchase, we’re happy to answer any questions you may have or provide any additional information that will allow you to make a more educated purchase.
