3.56ctw Round Orange Spessartite Garnet Pair

$1,600.00

Description:

These stones are round spessartite garnets with the combined weight of 3.56ctw. They are considered a pair, however have a slightly different cut from each other - one measuring 6.75mm and the other 6.90mm. They are a remarkable vivid orange in color and seem to glow from the inside out. This glowing affect is caused by the crystalline inclusions found in these stones. These inclusions are currently known as cummingtonite (formerly called tirodite). These stones were mined in Namibia and are the color to which other spessartite are compared. Interestingly, when this colored Namibian spessartite was first introduced it was marketed as "Hollandine" because it was particularly attractive to the people from the Netherlands and their royalty - "The House of Orange".

Spessartite is in the garnet family of stones. Spessartite garnet is sometimes known as mandarin garnet. Those that think all garnets are red will be amazed at the fiery orange color of a fine spessartite. Spessartite colors range from yellow-orange to reddish orange. Spessartite’s name comes from Spessart, an area of Germany where spessartite was mined. Spessartite is a US birthstone for January and offers a birthstone color that is a bit different from the norm.

Sources:

Most Spessartite is found in Brazil, Namibia, Sri Lanka, United States, and Madagascar.

Hardness:

Spessartite will measure 7 - 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Refractive Index:

Spessartite garnets have a refractive index of 1.790 - 1.820.

Care and Cleaning:

It is recommended to clean your spessartite with warm, soapy water. Ultrasonic cleaning could be risky for stones with large inclusions or fractures. Please do not ever steam clean a spessartite as all garnet is susceptible to thermal shock (a rapid change of temperature).
