Tsavorite garnet was only discovered in the 70’s in southern Kenya, in and around Kenya’s Tsavo National Park. It is an intense fiery green variety of grossular garnet. In 1974 Tiffany & Company introduced this stone to the US market as Tsavorite. Since then, it has become among the sought after and expensive garnets. Tsavorite is generally found in small sizes, ranging from 0.5ct to 3ct. Tsavorites larger than 5ct are extremely rare and expensive. It’s color ranges from intense yellowish green to an intense bright green. Tsavorite are an exotic high-quality alternative to emerald.
Tsavorites are found in Kenya and Tanzania.
Tsavorite garnets will measure 7 - 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Tsavorite garnets have a refractive index of 1.738 - 1.745.
Care and Cleaning:
It is recommended to clean your tsavorite garnet with warm, soapy water. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe, however, you should never steam clean a tsavorite garnet, as all garnet is susceptible to thermal shock (a rapid change of temperature).
