Rhodolite is readily available in smaller sizes, but finding clean pieces over 5ct without extinction of color is increasingly difficult. Rhodolites full color range includes light to dark purplish red through reddish purple, although, it is generally classified as a red garnet. Rhodolite is a US birthstone for January.
Most Rhodolite will be sourced from Tanzania, Sri Lanka, or Zimbabwe.
Most Rhodolite will measure 7 - 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Rhodolite garnets have a refractive index of pyrope: 1.720 - 1.756 ; almandite:1.770 - 1.820.
Care and Cleaning:
It is recommended to clean your rhodolite with warm, soapy water. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe, however, you should never steam clean a rhodolite as all garnet is susceptible to thermal shock (a rapid change of temperature).
