2.73ct Oval Blue Cobalt Spinel
This is 2.73ct oval cut blue cobalt spinel measuring 9.77 x 7.80 x 4.63mm. This stone comes from Burma (Myanmar). This is a very clean stone which has a small interior reflector inclusion on one edge. Due to its secondary light lavender color, it looks remarkably like a fine sapphire. This stone is a natural, unheated stone.
Through the ages, spinel has been one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated of gems. Spinels have very often been confused and sold as better known stones, like sapphire and ruby. Even the famous Black Prince’s Ruby, which has been a central stone in the British Imperial State Crown since the 1300s, is actually a magnificent 170ct red spinel.
Spinels limited availability is also a reason for its lack of public recognition. Spinel is difficult to find in sizes larger than 4ct. Spinel is often found alongside corundum and can be found in crystals, as well as waterworn pebbles in gem gravels. Spinels can range in color from violet, blue, purple, orange, pink, and red. Fine ruby-red spinels and deep rich blues are the most desirable colors. Spinel is a hard, tough stone that looks great and is suitable for daily wear in almost any type of jewelry.
Spinel can be found in Myanmar (particularly fine pinks and reds), Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Tanzania, and Brazil.
Spinel measures an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Spinel has a refractive index of 1.71-1.73.
Care and Cleaning:
It is recommended to clean your spinel with warm, soapy water. Ultrasonic and Steam cleaning are usually safe.
